Our pioneering concept, called the MiPod, emanates from
capsule sleeping first seen in the 1970s and provides a unique
solution for short-term accommodation for the homeless.
Temporary shelters are strategically
important to homeless people – a place where
they can stay for up to three weeks and link in with
the support services relevant to their needs before
moving onto a more permanent alternative. The MiPod
was developed in consultation with our residents, volunteers
and supporters and the concept has the potential to
transform emergency night shelter provision. Homelessness
continues to be a significant problem throughout the
country and we need to find ways of maximising the
availability and quality of care for those in need.
The
MiPod does this better than any other emergency short-term
accommodation currently available by combining welcoming,
modern design with safety to create individual and secure
spaces and overcoming issues associated with mixed-sex
dormitory-style operations. |

Every Pod contains a single bed, individually controlled
lighting and secure storage behind the bed. Durable and cleanable
laminate facings are used throughout: cheerful, non-institutional
coloured laminates on the outside; real timber veneer laminate
on the inside, to create a cosy, domestic environment for
the user. A semi-open roof balances safety and simple ventilation
requirements with privacy and a porthole in the door enables
carers to keep a discreet eye on residents. Generously curving
doors are not only a signature of the design, but they allow
ease of entry and provide a private sitting and dressing
space. Lighting is provided by LED downlights giving a safe
low-energy light of infinite life span.
We now have six MiPods installed at the shelter and are
hoping to raise funds to enable us to purchase 20 units which
will mean we can continue to offer the best possible care
for the many homeless needing help in our city.
This is an ambitious target so we
are urging the Brighton and Hove community to visit us,
view the concept and help us raise money in any way it
can.”
