MiPod is a unique concept comprising a 4-bed unit born out of a revolutionary design for a modern nightshelter and providing a supported short stay programme for people moving from the Lorica St Patrick's Nightshelter towards greater independence.
This 24/7 facility provides temporary accommodation while the residents transition from homelessness to more permanent supported accommodation such as a hostel or flat. The residents stay for approximately 12 weeks, giving them a critical personal break from the rigours of life outside and the opportunity to gather the support they need.
MiPod consists of three elements:
The Environment - a modern, self-contained flat providing a shared living space which requires cooperation and ownership to work
The Service - a Support Worker and individual Support Plans for each person, enabling the resident to 'polarise' their thoughts into achievable goals and make personal progress
The Pod - inspired by the 'capsule' hotels in Japan, each Pod provides a ventilated, lockable private space and contains a single bed, individually controlled lighting and secure storage
At Lorica St Patrick's we believe temporary shelters are strategically important to homeless people; they provide a place where they can stay for a limited amount of time, while linking in with the support services relevant to their needs before moving onto a more permanent alternative. Temporary shelters can be a place of safe transition, helping people to take control of their lives and move forward.
As homelessness continues to be a significant problem throughout the country, we need to find ways of maximising the availability and quality of care for those in need.
